On the 10th of August 1988, Chris Taylor received a letter containing two arsenic-laced chocolates at his legal practice. An accompanying letter claiming to be from a reputable national sweet manufacturer, referred to him as a "discerning consumer" and read; "Please enjoy the chocolates in your gift presentation - then complete the questionnaire and return it in the enclosed pre-paid envelope." Needless to say, neither Chris nor his secretary , with whom he shared the chocolates, had any idea that there was anything wrong with them. This was to prove an almost fatal assumption.

Soon afterwards, Chris and his secretary were admitted to hospital where doctors battled to save their lives. When Chris regained consciousness from a seven-day coma, he was completely paralysed, unable to talk and was connected to a life support system.

The next 16 months were spent in hospital and doctors had little hope of Chris recovering. His secretary, who was 7 months pregnant at the time, lost her unborn child.

Over the next few months Chris's condition deteriorated and he lost an incredible amount of weight. He was transferred to another hospital where staff proceeded with an intensive physiotherapy programme.

Having escaped death, his recovery was far from over. Sheer determination and a powerful imagination were the only tools Chris had in what would take years for him to walk again.

Today, Chris runs his own successful law firm, has two healthy children, JP and Hanli. Sadly his marriage to Janine ended in a divorce, but he has managed to overcome also this personal set-back. He has found new love and happiness with Christine, his fiancè and soon to be bride.
